Billy Etherington Leads As 19 Advance From Day 1A Of The MSPT South Dakota State Poker Championship

For the second year in a row, the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) has partnered with Silverado-Franklin Casino for the 2019 MSPT South Dakota State Poker Championship, a tournament that dates back to 2011. 107 players hit the felt in search of a Day 2 bag, but only 19 players would make it through the fifteen-level Day 1A, with Billy Etherington and his bag of 208,000 leading the way. Etherington, residing right here in Deadwood, will be looking for his first MSPT cash.

The rest of the top five include Leroy Dubray (193,500), Season 8 MSPT Grand Falls Regional champ Travis Gant (168,000), Tom Hammers (165,000), and Rudy Stanko (159,500). Others able to find a bag include Michael Campbell (127,000), Ryan Remington (106,000), Delbert Ghost Bear (100,000), Season 8 MSPT POY Chris Meyers (76,000), and Travis Sweet (26,500).

Not everyone was able to find a bag, however, and among those to fall on Day 1A were Season 9 MSPT POY Aaron Johnson, Canadian pro Eric Wasylenko, Alex “F’n” Winter, South Dakota pro Mark Fink, and former MSPT champs Rodger Johnson, Dan Bekavac, and Matt Kirby.

The good news is that those players, as well as any newcomers, will have the chance to fire Day 1B, which will kick off at 3 PM local time on Saturday. At 10 AM there will be a $260 buy-in “Last Chance” satellite that’ll see the top 20% win a seat into the Main Event. All players who make it to Day 2 will return at 11 AM on Sunday, May 5th to play down to a winner.

Chris Meyers Can't Shake Tom Hammers

Tom Hammers limped in from the hijack, and Chris Meyers raised to 15,000 from the cutoff. Hammers called.

Hammers checked a flop to Meyers, who bet 10,000. Hammers called.

The turn was checked again by Hammers, and Meyers bet 25,000. Hammers called again.

Both players checked the river. “Sevens,” Hammers said before rolling over . Meyers mucked.

Travis Bests Travis

Travis Gant raised to 7,500 from UTG+1, and Travis Sweet called on the button.

Both players checked a flop, and Gant bet 9,500 when the fell on the turn. Sweet called.

Gant took his time after the fell on the river before betting 14,000. Sweet quickly called, prompting Gant to say, “Good call.”

Sweet rolled over for kings and queen, and Gant mucked.

Tom Hammers' Numbers Can't Beat Rudy Stanko's Letters

Tom Hammers raised to 9,500 from the hijack, only to be met with a three-bet shove for 53,500 from Rudy Stanko on the button. Hammers thought for a bit, then slammed in a call.

“Two live cards!” Hammers said, but the flop left him drawing thin, and the turn and river sent the double over to Stanko.

Billy Etherington Cracks 200k

A player limped in from the hijack, and Billy Etherington (pictured, left) raised to 8,500 from the cutoff. Chris Meyers (pictured, right) made the call on the button, as did the limper.

The hijack checked a flop over to Etherington, who quickly bet 22,000. Meyers folded, and the hijack flung his on the table, awarding the pot to Etherington.

Nick Marchindo Puts A Big Dent In Ryan Remington

Ryan Remington raised to 5,500 from the cutoff, only to be met with a three-bet shove for 64,500 from Nick Marchindo in the small blind. Remington tanked for a bit, then called, leaving himself just 2,000 behind.

Dan Bekavac's Making A Comeback

A player jammed for 26,000 from UTG, and Dan Bekavac, who was crippled down to just under two big blinds earlier in the level, three-bet jammed for 40,000 from the lojack, chasing out the field.
